Some late model automotive keys take time to program in to the car diagnostically.
A Volkswagen can take from 30 mins to a couple of hours, this does not have any affect on the cost of the key.

What is a transponder key?​
A Transponder Key is a key with a small chip in it that has to be present when the ignitionn is turned to start. Without it the car cannot start or fire the ignition. As of yet I have not ever seen a over-ride trick for this type of system so it is a very good theft deterrent.
I have lost my only car key, can you make another?
It costs alot less to make or program a new key if you have a working key to duplicate from or turn the ignition on so as the diagnostic equippment communicates with the cars ECU

Best have a backup key made before you find yourself with no keys,  being prepared by having spare key / keys. However we can usually get you on the road same day with a couple of working keys.
Why do car keys cost so much these days?
One of the things that I have noticed in the last 10 years is new car prices have kept relatively low. The car manufacturing industry now makes their main profit from parts that the car needs over the years to keep it on the road.
One of the parts is genuine car keys and diagnostic software for programming the keys in.
Here is a simple break down of what some of the costs are for a laser cut BASIC immobiliser key for a 2004 lexus including the equippment that the locksmith has to invest in:
The laser cutting machine with code software $12,000
An authorised diagnostic programmer with correct reliable software that uses licence tokens for programming $9,000
The ​Transponder Key approximately $190 
The time to make and program this key 25-30 mins
GST @15% approx $30
For all of this, the finished programmed key costs aproximatley $200 to 300 and can save the car owner Thousands of dollars on a new ECU computer if their original is lost.
As tech moves forward we are more able to obtain more good quality aftermarket options the translates to better prices that the OEM dealership keys.
